Another Pakistani cadet wins ‘Sword of Honour’ at Sandhurst-UK

Bringing Honour to the Nation

It was another glorious day for Pakistani nation when another Son of the Soil proved his metal on a foreign land. Pakistan Army's, Cadet Officer Muhammad Talha Zahid (
who is to commission into the 21st Battalion, the Punjab) went under rigorous training at RMA Sandhurst, UK and proved himself THE BEST OF THE BEST by winning "Sword of Honour" for over seas cadets. He is the 5th Pakistani achieving this great honour.

Best overall cadets from different countries all around the world are sent here to get trained in this renowned military institution. A Pakistani winning the sword speaks itself of the high standards of Pakistan Army Military Training setup.

Beside the sword the cadet also won the following awards:

a) The Prince Saud Abdullah Faisal of Saudi Arabia Prize for Overseas Cadet for Best Academic Scores.

b) The Pakistan Defence & International Affairs (DIA) Prize for Best Performance at DIA by an Overseas Cadet.

c) The Brunei Prize for Best Performance at War Studies by an Overseas Cadet.

The ceremony was attended by High Commissioner of Pakistan and Army and Air Advisor. The individual has indeed made his nation proud on this great day and will surely prove to be a great asset for future of Pakistan Army.


The Overseas Sword, awarded to the Overseas Cadet considered by the Commandant to be the best of the intake, was presented to Officer Cadet Muhammad Talha Zahid from the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, who is to commission into the 21st Battalion, the Punjab Regiment.
Talha is 22 years old and was born in Jhelum, Pakistan. He was a keen sportsman at school, particularly interested in swimming, horse riding, tennis, squash and cricket. He took the equivalent of A levels at the Army Public School, Gujranwala before entering the Pakistan Military Academy (PMA), Kakul, in 2009 at the age of 19, where, after 18 months of military training, he was selected to attend the RMAS, having come in the top ten of a 300-strong Gentleman Cadet intake. 
At Sandhurst he continued to excel both militarily and academically, winning prizes as the best Overseas Cadet in overall academic achievement, in War Studies and Defence and International Affairs.  He also played with the polo and squash clubs and, in the Junior Term, took up sub-aqua diving for the first time. He was Platoon Sergeant of the winning platoon in the March and Shoot Competition. 
On returning to Pakistan Talha will first attend the five week long Low Intensity Conflict Course before joining his battalion, a Light Anti-Tank Infantry unit.

Each Commissioning Course has awards granted to outstanding cadets

Sword of Honour

The Sword of Honour is awarded to the British Army Officer Cadet considered by the Commandant to be, overall, the best of the course. The swords were formerly made by Wilkinson Sword but after the closure of their sword making division they are now presented by Pooley Sword who also present swords for the Royal Marines and Royal Air Force. During the Second World War, when abbreviated courses were run to increase the supply of new officers, a Belt of Honour was awarded instead.

Overseas Sword

The Overseas Sword is awarded to one of the many cadets sent by foreign armies. The Overseas Sword goes to the Overseas Cadet considered by the Commandant to be the best of the course. It was previously known as the Overseas Cane.

Queen's Medal

The Queen's Medal is awarded to the British Army Officer Cadet who achieved the highest scores in military, practical and academic studies.

Duke of Westminster's Sword

The Duke of Westminster's Sword is awarded to the officer cadet considered by the Commandant to be, overall, the best of the TA Commissioning Course. This sword is also donated by Pooley Sword.
